Today’s scamping brings us mud larking with Thames Explorer Trust (@thamesexplorer).
What a brilliant couple of hours, listening to the history of life around the Thames from medieval time through to the Victorians. Our tour guide Marie spoke very knowledgeably about the pottery and ceramics through the years, then we were let loose. Only rules were, no disturbing the river bed and any finds are left behind.
My daughter is reading Lara Maiklem's "Mudlarking: Lost and Found on the River Thames" (@london.mudlark). I say reading, devouring every word more like! She is a budding archaeologist and has just discovered mud larking. Thank you Lara for bringing it to life!
We are waiting with baited breath for permits to be opened up again so that we can do it properly.
Our guide told us that the large triangular piece in the middle of our main photo is medieval from the 15th century. Rarely is glazed each side so must have been from a very fancy pot, as usually only the insides were glazed. 600 years!! 🤯 I just can’t get my brain around it.
What a fabulous day and my daughter is grinning from ear to ear. Brilliant!
