I have lived in South East London for the past 16 years and until today I had absolutely no idea that this little gem existed! Tucked behind Wickes in Catford lie the River Ravensbourne and River Pool. I spent a fabulous 90 minutes walking along the River Pool Linear Park.
Interspersed between the pretty greenery, trickling water and birdsong are some fantastic examples of London graffiti at its best, thanks to the work of Nathan Bowen and the white stags of the mysterious "Lewisham Natureman".
In the heart of London, a city known for its bustling streets and vibrant energy, lies a tranquil escape that many, like me, are yet to discover – the River Pool Linear Park forming part of the Waterlink Way. This scenic route meanders through the heart of South London, providing a serene and peaceful respite from the chaos of city life. In this comprehensive blog post, we’ll delve into the history, the attractions, and the natural beauty that make the River Pool Linear Park a hidden gem.
A Glimpse into History
Before we embark on our journey through the River Pool Linear Park, let’s take a moment to appreciate its historical significance. The River Pool, which this park follows, has a rich past, serving as a vital waterway for transportation and trade in London for centuries. Today, it offers a stark contrast to its bustling history as a tranquil oasis.
Starting Your Adventure
This picturesque linear park spans approximately 6 miles, making it an ideal day trip for both nature enthusiasts and history aficionados. Your journey begins at Lower Sydenham Station, a short and easily accessible train ride from central London. Here, the urban landscape gives way to the peaceful haven of the River Pool Linear Park. I joined the park at Catford and walked towards Lower Sydenham.
Natural Beauty and Wildlife
As you meander along the path, you’ll find yourself surrounded by lush greenery, creating an immersive and calming atmosphere. The riverbanks are home to a variety of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for graceful ducks, majestic swans, and even the occasional flash of color from a kingfisher. The soothing sound of flowing water accompanies you throughout your journey, while the local flora and fauna provide a visual feast for the senses.
Historical Highlights
Continuing on your route, you’ll come across several historical sites that add depth to your experience. Notably, the area near the Crystal Palace, a once-majestic structure, still carries remnants of its grandeur. Although the palace itself was destroyed by fire, the ambience here resonates with a rich and storied past.
