Dropped the girl at one of her archaeological digs this morning at St John's Jerusalem, Sutton-at-Hone and then took myself off for an explore in the sunshine. Google took me for some Autumnal wanderings in Darenth Country Park.
As the leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold, there's no better time to embark on a peaceful woodland walk in the picturesque county of Kent. At times I felt I had the Park to myself. I think in the 90 minutes I was exploring, I only saw five humans being walked by their dogs! The Park itself is a lovely mixture of fields, paddocks, woodlands, orchards (over 150 varieties of apple, plum, pear, cherry and cob nut tress and delightfully you can help yourself when they are in season!) and pathways.
The highlight for me was the Chestnut Avenue lined with Horsechestnuts. So pretty walking under the falling leaves and crunching through the conkers, Autumn really is here, the kaleidoscope of colours even richer in the dabbled shade.
Then it was time to explore the woodland, up some steps and I was into a lovely clearing with lots of pathways. With only squirrels and birds for company, bathing in the nature around me was serene and tranquil - as I walked further through I could begin to hear the M25. I quite like the juxtaposition of the urban and country noises - the lorries were easily out-matched by the birdsong!
One of the greatest joys of an autumnal woodland walk is the opportunity for quiet contemplation and reflection. There were lots of benches dotted around, so finding a peaceful spot to sit and soak in the serenity of nature, allowing the sights, sounds, and scents of the forest to rejuvenate my spirit was not hard.
Listening to my tummy rumble, the only thing missing was a cafe, so back to the car and off to the Fighting Cocks in the pretty Horton Kirkby for a juicy bacon cheeseburger and fries (delicious) overlooking the river Darent. Such a lovely setting that I nearly forgot to leave to pick up the girl!!
All in all, a lovely afternoon. Would I recommend autumnal wanderings in Darenth Country Park? Absolutely! Lace up your walking shoes, and let these woodlands of Kent enchant you with their autumnal splendor. Just remember your flask!
